Do you not know that your body is a temple
of the Holy Spirit within you,
whom you have from God?
You are not your own,
for you were bought with a price

Paul ~ 1 Corinthians 6:19

The culture in which we swim tells us that we are our own.  No one can tell us what to do or what to think.  Paul says that this is actually a lie for those who are Christians.

Often times, I say that people are followers of Christ, but the literal description is not the whole story.  If we are really following what Jesus taught, then we are subscribing to his teachings about his death.  He knew he would die as a substitute for the evil we have done.  He knew he would bring us the Holy Spirit to guide us in our new life after his death and resurrection.  He would secure our life by paying for it with his death.  We were bought as part of his plans.

It can be easy to take a mental shortcut and say that we lose our freedom and are trapped if this is true.  This is not the case.  Jesus freed us for a rich and meaningful life:  God will dwell with us, He will accept us fully despite our evil hearts, and He will adopt us into His family as sons and daughters.  We are not our own, we are His.  This is not God domineering over us, but accepting us and welcoming us home.

This is our motivation for living Holy lives, not that we must, but that we can, because we belong to God.
